Dr. Warren R. Barclay
Welcome to Barclay Chiropractic! My name is Dr. Warren R. Barclay (Dr. B) I am originally from Lowell, Massachusetts and my first experience with Hudson was playing golf at Green Meadow Golf Course at the age fourteen. I guess I was impressed because we moved our family to Hudson in 1986.
I received my professional training at St. Francis Xavier University (Nova Scotia, Canada) and the University of New Hampshire. I have a Masters degree from the University of Maine and received my Doctorate at Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa.
My wife Suzanne is from Sorel, Quebec and we have three children: Dr. Ryan, Allison and Patrick. As an officer in the U.S. Army, I lived and traveled in many states. Having had this opportunity to compare different parts of the country, the beauty of New England’s four seasons brought us home. We did an extensive personal survey to determine where my skills would be most needed. There was no doubt this was the place! Where do we live…a street parallel to Green Meadow Golf Course. Where is our office? Our office (log cabin) sits across from the entrance to Green Meadow Golf Course in Hudson. We are also communicants of St. Kathryn’s Church.
I have extensive sports experience that translates into my love for treating sports related injuries. I continue to compete in golf and curling and enjoy skiing, fishing and kayaking.
At Barclay Chiropractic, you are welcome to experience the remarkable combination of "Traditional Chiropractic and State of the Art Technology."
Dr. Ryan Barclay is a New Englander at heart and chiropractic has been in his blood since the day he was born! Growing up around chiropractic care his whole life, the bug finally bit him. After high school he decided to follow in his father’s footsteps to venture into the best profession out there which is helping people get healthy and pain free naturally.
Although, he was born in Maine and was raised in Hudson, New Hampshire, he was not afraid to share his New England colors with the Midwest! Dr. Ryan Barclay is a 2008 graduate of Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa. While in school he was a member of the Delta Sigma Chi fraternity, an organization dedicated to the promotion of chiropractic.
Since joining his father in practice in 2010, Dr. Ryan has become very involved with the community. He's currently a member of the Nashua Rotary Club as well as the Merrimack Valley Curling Club. When not helping sick people get well through the benefits of chiropractic care, he enjoys curling, reading, watching movies, snowboarding, and hiking Dr. Ryan is happy to serve you with any health needs you may have and hopes to see you soon!

Causes Of Back Pain
Because the muscles, ligaments, bones, discs and nerves that comprise your spinal column are so interconnected, it's often difficult to determine without a comprehensive exam and X-rays, exactly what the cause of your pain may be.
Also, an injury or stress in one area, can lead to additional problems in a kind of "domino effect." For instance, a simple muscle strain may cause you to compensate by carrying your weight differently which can lead to an overall imbalance in the spine or strain on different muscles creating additional problems.
Here are a few of the most common causes of back pain:
Injury or overuse: If you've been injured in an auto, work, or recreational accident, get help at once . Since injury can affect muscles, ligaments, bones or discs around the spine, it's important that you get a proper diagnosis and treatment plan (if required) before the dominos begin to fall.
Repetitive motion and overuse of muscles and joints due to excessive bending, lifting, or other unusual exercise can also cause damage, injury or pain. These symptoms may disappear in time, but if structural damage has occurred, they or other seemingly unrelated symptoms could flare up later. A spinal exam or assessment is recommended
Nerve Pressure or Damage: Pressure on nerve roots in the spinal canal can be caused in a variety of ways; from injury or overuse as mentioned above or from disease or degeneration as follows:
Emotional and Physical Stress: Stress in life can cause muscle tension and set off a vicious cycle of pain. As muscles contract, fatigue can cause muscle aches or pain. Pain and discomfort can lead to sleeplessness with its associated problems such as irritability, depression, and reduced immune function. And so the problems perpetuate.

Treatment Options
Common treatments of upper and lower back pain include everything from bed rest to surgery. REMEMBER: Pain is NOT the natural state of the body, nor is it a "normal" side effect of aging. Pain is the body's way of telling you something is wrong! The best solution is to identify the cause of your pain and correct it-not simply mask the symptoms.
Any of the following treatments can be effective, but most have associated risks of which you should be aware. For this reason it is best to consult with a trusted healthcare practitioner, especially if pain is severe or prolonged.
However sensible getting off your back may seem, studies show that bed rest is NOT superior to remaining (conservatively) active to treat a low back injury. In fact, prolonged bed rest can actually lead to increased stiffness and pain and a reduced ability to function. Periodic short rests can be helpful and your healthcare provider may advise a reduction of normal activity.
Immediately after an injury, ice your back for about 15 minutes at least 3 to 4 times a day to reduce or prevent inflammation and swelling. After 2 to 3 days, if symptoms persist, use a heating pad for 15 to 20 minutes every 2 or 3 hours. Then, if pain continues, see a healthcare professional.
Non-prescription pain relievers such as acetaminophen (i.e. Tylenol) or other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or NSAIDS (i.e. ibuprofen) may be helpful for temporary relief, but are NOT advisable for chronic pain or long term use. Tylenol has recently been linked to liver disease and ibuprofen to bleeding ulcers. Doctors often prescribe stronger drugs for pain, but of course, these have other risky side effects including mental or physical impairment, behavioral effects, and addiction. Extreme caution should be used when undergoing any chemical therapy for pain.
Most back pain problems can be treated effectively without costly and risky surgeries. In fact, one recent study shows that up to 40% of back surgery patients report a DIS-satisfactory result within 4 years of treatment. For this reason, other more natural, less invasive treatments should be explored or exhausted before choosing surgical intervention.
Chiropractic is a natural form of treatment that operates on the premise that the body is designed to heal itself. Chiropractors actually have more training than a traditional general or family care physician. Chiropractors use gentle spinal adjustments to correct spinal misalignment and relieve pressure on sensitive nerves. They often combine this form of treatment with other non-invasive modalities such as muscle stimulation, ultrasound, massage, and physical therapy to relieve symptoms and rebuild core strength and maintain permanent correction. The chiropractor's goal is always to correct the problem, not simply hide the symptoms.
Testimonials
*"Barclay Chiropractic has freed me from severe pain in my neck and lower back. They're always very willing to accommodate my crazy schedule and I couldn't imagine what I'd do without them!"

*"I was lucky to get a tip about Dr. B from my brother. I had previously seen two other chiropractors and never saw any improvements…just the same pain. Dr. B has helped me with the adjustments, stretches and with the purchase of an inversion table. I had trouble with my lower back prior to seeing Dr. B but now no more problems! I am more active than ever before; always at the gym or out cycling and I also work very hard physically at my job. I can’t forget to mention that Dr. B’s staff is the best. They are always happy and pleasant to be around."

*"I had hip surgery in January of 2012 and by the time I left rehab I had severe lower back muscle spasms, to the point where I could barely move. My hip was fine but my back was a different story. As I sat at home I knew I needed something other than pain pills, so I contacted Barclay Chiropractic. I was then introduced to cold laser therapy. After the first treatment 80% of my back pain was gone. I said it was a miracle and the doctor said, no it’s cold laser Therapy!! The treatment is painless and you feel nothing. After just 5 minutes of therapy, I had no lower back pain. I have known people with lower back pain that have tried different treatments without success. Why put up with the pain when you can have relief with Cold Laser Therapy! You can’t help but wonder how a laser light can work to emit healing powers but it does."

*"I have suffered from daily severe low back pain from June, 2010, as a result of an automobile accident. Examinations, x-rays and MRI’s revealed a cervical and lumbar strain, a bulging disc and two protruding discs with one impinging upon a nerve root. As a result of the accident, I underwent several rounds of physical therapy, lumbar epidural steroid injections and facet joint medial branch nerve blocks, all of which were unsuccessful in alleviating my daily chronic low back pain.
I decided to go to Barclay Chiropractic for additional lumbar adjustments in hopes that somehow the protruding disc would retract from the nerve root after undergoing several rounds of adjustments. During my initial appointment, the doctor recommended that I undergo Cold Laser Therapy (CLT). To my astonishment after receiving two laser therapy treatments, I was completely pain free after experiencing daily chronic pain for a year and a half. My physical activity level has significantly increased since receiving CLT. I am forever grateful to Barclay Chiropractic for recommending and providing such an effective and successful therapy treatment!"

*"When I first went to Dr. B my head would be cocked to one side by 2:00pm and I could not straighten it out. Through regular adjustments with Dr. B this problem no longer existed. I can’t tell you how many times I would be doing something and all of a sudden my back would go out. When this would happen, I would call the office and was always told to come in immediately. Another time I pinched a nerve in my neck and my arm felt like it was on fire but after many adjustments at Barclay Chiropractic, my problem was alleviated.
I can’t say enough about Dr. B’s staff; they are all so pleasant and helpful. I have participated in all the services the office offers and love the massages too!"

*"I’ve trusted Barclay Chiropractic with my care for over 12 years after having been recommended by a physical therapist specializing in cervical/spinal care. I’ve had good progress with maintaining functionality and minimizing pain. Most recently, with the addition of cold laser treatments, I’ve experienced incredible improvements-especially in my neck and upper back which had been causing me chronic pain. I’ve been able to go off Celebrex, which I had been on for over 10 years. I am working long hours without daily pain and I’m able to do more of the things I enjoy like gardening. My quality of life has been greatly improved!"
